Discovery Freediving is the same course as the Beginner Level 1 — minus the final certification day. Two days of theory, breathing techniques, equalization training, and open water dives at Sail Rock or Koh Tao with Diego Pauel, max 3 students. If you decide you want the certification, upgrade to the full course and your Discovery days count.

Your 2 Day Schedule

Same structure as the Beginner Course. Day 1 is theory and confined water. Day 2 is open water dives at Sail Rock or Koh Tao.

Day 1

Theory and Breathing

Crystal Bay Beach Club

  • > Freediving physiology — how breath holding works and what happens to your body
  • > Breathing techniques for relaxation and longer breath holds
  • > Equalization theory and dry practice
  • > Confined water session — equipment fitting, fin technique, body position, surface breath holds
  • > Duck dive and equalization practice in shallow water

By end of Day 1 you will have done your first breath holds and practiced all the fundamentals on land and in the water.

Day 2

Open Water at Sail Rock

Speedboat to Dive Site

  • > Speedboat to Sail Rock or Koh Tao
  • > Your first real depth dives in the ocean with Diego Pauel right beside you
  • > Line training, duck dive coaching, and rescue technique practice
  • > Depth adjusted to your comfort — most reach 10 to 15 meters
  • > Marine life, underwater photos, and debrief on the boat

By end of Day 2 you will have freedived in the open ocean. If you want to continue, add Day 3 for your Apnea Total certification.

Diego Pauel holds certifications in emergency first aid and oxygen administration. O2 equipment is on board for every open water session.

Teaching freediving from Koh Samui since 2021. Apnea Total instructor with additional training in breathwork, oxygen administration, and emergency first aid. That depth of knowledge means better coaching on technique, breathing, and equalization, not just checking boxes.

He keeps every session to a maximum of 3 students. His approach is patient, clear, and focused on making you feel comfortable in the water. You will not be rushed. You will not be pushed beyond what feels right.

Want to Go Deeper?

Discovery gives you Day 1 and Day 2 of the Beginner Freediving Course (Level 1). If you want the certification, just add Day 3.

Day 3 is the final depth assessment and fun dives. You complete it and receive your Apnea Total Level 1 certification, recognized worldwide. Most Discovery students add it.

Your 2 Discovery days count in full. Pay the difference, add Day 3, and you are certified.

Questions About Discovery Freediving

Do I need any experience? +
None at all. Discovery Freediving is designed for people who have never tried freediving. You just need to be comfortable in water. Diego teaches you everything from scratch on the day.
How deep will I go? +
Most Discovery students reach 10 to 15 meters by the end of Day 2. The focus is on comfort and technique rather than pushing depth. You will be surprised how natural it feels once you learn to relax.
What is the difference between Discovery and the Beginner Course? +
Discovery is the same training as the Beginner Course, just without the third day. You get Day 1 (theory, breathing, confined water) and Day 2 (open water dives at Sail Rock or Koh Tao). The only thing you miss is Day 3 which is the final depth assessment and Apnea Total certification. Many Discovery students add the third day and upgrade.
Can I upgrade to the Beginner Course after? +
Yes. Your 2 Discovery days count toward the Beginner Course. You just add Day 3 and pay the difference to get your Apnea Total Level 1 certification. Diego can usually schedule the third day within the same week.
What do I need to bring? +
Just swimwear and sunscreen. All freediving equipment is provided including wetsuit, mask, fins, and weight belt. Diego handles hotel pickup and drop off.
