How Much Does a Freediving Course Cost in Thailand? (2026 Prices)

Thailand is one of the most affordable places in the world to learn freediving. Warm water year round, world class dive sites, a deep pool of certified instructors, and a cost of living that keeps course prices well below what you would pay in Europe, Australia, or the Americas.

But prices vary significantly depending on which island you choose, which certification system the school uses, how many students share your instructor, and what is actually included in the quoted price. Some schools advertise a low number and then add fees for equipment, boat trips, or the certification card itself. Others quote all inclusive and the number looks higher until you realize there is nothing extra to pay.

This guide breaks down real 2026 prices across Thailand's main freediving destinations. No affiliate links, no sponsorships. Just the numbers as they stand right now, with enough context to help you figure out what is actually worth paying for.

Freediving Course Prices Across Thailand (2026)

Here is what you can expect to pay for beginner and advanced freediving courses at the main destinations in Thailand. These are based on current published prices from schools operating in each location as of early 2026.

Location Beginner Course Advanced Course Typical Duration
Koh Tao 7,000–9,000 THB 9,000–12,000 THB 2 days
Koh Samui 9,000–10,000 THB 11,000–13,000 THB 3 days
Koh Phangan 7,000–9,500 THB 9,000–12,000 THB 2 days
Koh Lanta 9,000–11,000 THB 11,000–14,000 THB 2–3 days
Phuket 10,000–14,000 THB 12,000–16,000 THB 2–3 days
Bangkok (pool only) 7,000–9,000 THB 9,000–11,000 THB 1–2 days

A few notes on reading this table. Koh Tao looks cheapest, and on a per-baht basis it often is. But most Koh Tao schools run 2 day courses with groups of 6 to 8 students. Koh Samui and Phuket tend to run 3 day courses with smaller groups. Bangkok pool courses skip open water entirely, so the certification is technically incomplete for ocean diving without additional sessions.

Why Prices Vary So Much

A 7,000 THB course and a 14,000 THB course are not the same product. Here is what drives the difference.

Group Size

This is the single biggest factor. A school running groups of 8 can charge half the price of a school capping groups at 3 because the instructor cost is spread across more students. But the experience is completely different. With 8 students on a training line, you might get 4 or 5 dives in a session. With 3 students, you get 8 to 10. More dives means more practice, more feedback, and faster progress.

Course Duration

A 2 day course saves you a day of vacation. A 3 day course gives you roughly 50% more water time and a dedicated day at a proper dive site like Sail Rock. Some schools compress the beginner course into 2 days to keep prices low and throughput high. Others stretch it to 3 because the extra day produces a noticeably more competent freediver.

What Is Included

Some schools include everything in the price: equipment, boat trips, photos, video, certification card. Others quote the course fee only and then add line items for equipment rental, boat fuel surcharges, and the certification card processing fee. Always ask what is included before comparing headline numbers.

Certification System

Thailand's main certification systems are AIDA, SSI, PADI, and Apnea Total. Here is a quick overview:

  • AIDA — The original freediving agency. Widely recognized globally. Most common on Koh Tao. Structured curriculum with clear depth requirements at each level.
  • SSI — Historically a scuba agency that expanded into freediving. Good digital platform for theory materials. Growing presence in Thailand.
  • PADI — The largest dive agency in the world. Their freediving program is relatively new compared to AIDA but carries strong brand recognition. Tends to be pricier because of PADI licensing fees.
  • Apnea Total — A freediving specific agency focused on instructor quality over volume. Smaller network but highly regarded within the freediving community. Used on Koh Samui.

All four certifications are recognized internationally. The agency matters less than the instructor. A great instructor using any system will produce a competent freediver. A mediocre instructor with a prestigious logo will not.

Safety Equipment

Emergency oxygen on the boat is not standard everywhere. Neither is a dedicated safety diver. Schools that carry emergency O2 equipment, maintain current first aid certifications, and limit group sizes for safety reasons have higher operating costs. Those costs show up in the price. They should.

Instructor Experience

An instructor with 5 years of full time teaching experience, multiple agency certifications, and thousands of supervised student dives charges more than someone who completed their instructor course 6 months ago. The difference in price reflects a difference in the quality of feedback you receive on your technique, your equalization, and your safety.

What Is Usually Included (And What Is Not)

A standard freediving course in Thailand typically includes:

  • All diving equipment (mask, snorkel, freediving fins, wetsuit, weight belt)
  • Theory materials (digital or printed manual)
  • Pool or confined water training sessions
  • Open water training sessions
  • Certification card upon passing

What is usually NOT included:

  • Accommodation. No school in Thailand includes accommodation in the course price. Budget 500 to 2,000 THB per night depending on the island and your standards.
  • Boat trips to distant sites. Some schools include boat trips. Others charge a separate boat fee, particularly for trips to Sail Rock or other offshore sites.
  • Photos and video. Some schools include these. Others charge 500 to 1,500 THB extra.
  • Food on the boat. Bring your own snacks and water.
  • Travel insurance. Always your responsibility. Get a policy that explicitly covers freediving. Standard travel insurance often excludes it.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

This is where cheap courses sometimes get expensive.

  • "Course only" prices. The advertised price covers instruction but not the boat trip to the dive site. The boat fee adds 1,000 to 3,000 THB depending on the site and the school.
  • Certification card fees. Some schools charge an additional 500 to 1,500 THB for "processing" the certification card. This should be included in the course price.
  • Equipment rental. Rare, but some budget schools do not include equipment. You pay 300 to 500 THB per day for fins and wetsuit on top of the course price.
  • Marine park entry fees. If your course visits Ang Thong National Marine Park, the entry fee is 300 THB per person and is almost never included in the course price.
  • Insurance surcharges. A few schools charge a mandatory "safety fee" or "insurance fee" of 500 to 1,000 THB on top of the course price.

Before booking, ask one simple question: "What is the total amount I will pay from start to finish, including all fees?" Any school worth attending will give you a straight answer.

Our Pricing at Freediving Koh Samui

Full transparency. Here is what we charge and what is included.

  • Discovery Freediving (2 days): 7,500 THB — An introduction to freediving for people who want the experience without the full certification commitment.
  • Beginner Level 1 (3 days): 9,500 THB — Full Apnea Total Level 1 certification. Theory, confined water, and open water including a day at Sail Rock.
  • Advanced Level 2 (3 days): 12,000 THB — Mouthfill equalization, deeper constant weight technique, advanced rescue. Requires existing Level 1 from any agency.
  • Fun Dives / Coaching (half day): 4,500 THB per person.

Every price includes: all equipment, boat trips, certification fees, emergency oxygen on the boat, and photos/video of your training. There are no additional fees. The number you see is the number you pay.

Maximum 3 students per course. That is a hard limit, not an average. Your instructor is watching every dive, correcting your technique in real time, and never splitting attention across a crowd.

Is it the cheapest option in Thailand? No. Koh Tao has schools running 2 day courses in groups of 8 for 7,000 THB. But when you compare on a per-day, per-student basis with everything included, the value is competitive. You get 50% more training time, a fraction of the group size, and no surprise costs at the end.

Is Thailand Worth It Compared to Other Destinations?

If you are planning a freediving trip and considering other countries, here is how Thailand stacks up.

Destination Beginner Course (USD) Notes
Thailand $200–$350 Widest range of schools. Warm water. Excellent dive sites.
Egypt (Dahab) $250–$350 Blue Hole is iconic. Desert climate. Very affordable living costs.
Philippines $250–$400 Moalboal and Panglao are popular. Great marine life.
Indonesia (Bali) $300–$450 Amed and Tulamben. Strong currents can be challenging for beginners.

Thailand offers the best combination of price, dive site quality, instructor availability, and overall travel infrastructure. You can fly direct to Koh Samui from Bangkok. You do not need a ferry or a connecting flight to a tiny regional airport. The island has proper hospitals, reliable wifi, international food, and none of the rough-it backpacker constraints of more remote destinations.

Egypt is comparable on price but very different in dive environment. The Philippines and Indonesia are slightly more expensive on average and can involve more complex travel logistics depending on which island you choose.

How to Choose the Right Course for Your Budget

If price is your primary concern, Koh Tao will give you the lowest number. But before you book on price alone, ask these questions:

  • How many students will be in my group?
  • Is it a 2 day or 3 day course?
  • Is equipment included?
  • Are boat trips to open water sites included?
  • Is the certification card included or is there an extra fee?
  • Does the boat carry emergency oxygen?
  • How many years of teaching experience does the instructor have?

A 7,000 THB course in a group of 8 over 2 days gives you roughly 3 to 4 hours of actual water time with limited individual feedback. A 9,500 THB course in a group of 3 over 3 days gives you roughly 8 to 10 hours of water time with personalized coaching on every dive. The second option costs 35% more and delivers roughly 200% more value in terms of actual instruction.

Freediving is a skill sport. The quality of your initial training determines your technique, your safety habits, and your confidence in the water for years. Saving 2,500 THB on the front end and developing poor equalization technique or bad habits on the line is not a saving.
