What to Expect

A full day of spearfishing from Koh Samui. Here is how it typically plays out.

7:30 AM

Meet at the Pier

Meet Diego Pauel at the departure pier on Koh Samui. All equipment is loaded on the boat. Quick briefing on safety, spearfishing technique, and the plan for the day.

8:00 AM

Depart by Speedboat

Leave Koh Samui and head to the fishing grounds. Diego Pauel selects the best location based on conditions, season, and what species are running. Travel time varies from 30 minutes to over an hour depending on the destination.

9:00 AM

Gear Up and Enter the Water

Suit up with speargun, mask, fins, and wetsuit. If you are new to spearfishing, Diego Pauel covers breath hold technique, how to approach fish, and how to use the speargun safely before you enter the water.

9 to 3 PM

Hunt Across Multiple Spots

A full day of hunting across multiple spots. You rotate between diving and resting on the boat. Diego Pauel dives with you, points out fish, and coaches your technique throughout. Lunch break on the boat between sessions.

4:00 PM

Return with Your Catch

Head back to the pier with your catch. Diego Pauel cleans and prepares the fish on the way back. He can recommend local restaurants that will cook your fish for you that evening.

Do I need a freediving certification to go spearfishing? +
No. You do not need a freediving certification. You need to be comfortable swimming in the ocean and able to hold your breath long enough to dive a few meters below the surface. Diego will teach you the basics of breath hold diving and spearfishing technique on the day.
What fish can we catch? +
Common catches include barracuda, trevally, grouper, snapper, and mackerel. Species vary by season and location. Diego knows the local waters and will take you to the best spots for the conditions on the day.

Yes. Spearfishing is legal in the waters around Koh Samui. Koh Tao is a marine conservation zone where spearfishing is restricted, which is why Koh Tao based schools cannot offer this experience. Trips stay in approved waters at all times.
What equipment do I need to bring? +
Nothing. All spearfishing equipment (spearguns, fins, masks, wetsuits, weight belts) is provided. Bring swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, and water. Lunch and drinks can be arranged on request.
How many people can join a trip? +
Two boat options. The single engine boat fits up to 4 people for 24,000 THB. The double engine speedboat fits up to 10 people for 35,000 THB. In both cases, maximum 3 people spearfish at a time — Diego guides everyone in the water. Price is per boat, not per person, so the more people on board the cheaper it gets per head.
What if the weather is bad? +
Diego monitors conditions daily. If the sea state makes the trip unsafe or unenjoyable, he will contact you to reschedule. Your booking moves to the next available date at no extra cost.
Can beginners join the trip? +
Absolutely. Many guests have never spearfished or freedived before. Diego teaches breath hold fundamentals, fish approach tactics, and speargun handling before you enter the water. He stays with you throughout the day and adapts the experience to your level.
